Walk Through the Rain by Lorelie Autor

As the song goes, “Walk on, through the wind ...Walk on, through the rain ...Though your dreams be tossed and blown...Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart... And you'll never walk alone.” This has been the theme of AnCOP (Answering the Cry Of the Poor) International Bermuda’s GK (Gawad Kalinga) Walk 2009.

Having to postpone its original scheduled Charity Walk on August 23, 2009, due to a Hurricane in Bermuda, the GK Walk participants successfully completed the 5-kilometer Fundraising Walk despite persistent threats of wind and rain on September 13, 2009.

A total of 175 people participated in the said event from a total of 229 who initially registered. The crowd, a good mix of young and matured participants, gathered at the Botanical Garden to start off with some stretching exercises led by the Swan’s Running Club President, Mr. Calvin Steede.

The clouds that day brought some drizzle which seemingly blessed the scenic route of Harbour Road, Lover’s Lane, and South Road, even before the walk began. However, the enthusiastic and excited GK walkers embraced the weather and were determined to complete the task of walking to fight poverty around the world.

The annual GK Walk event has become one of the premier fund raising event of AnCOP International organizations worldwide. Over the past five years, GK Walk has collectively raised more than $5 Million to build low cost homes for the poorest of the poor and provide education to over 2,000 children.

This was the first time for Bermuda to participate in the annual GK Walk. The GK Walk 2009 was officially launched on May 9, 2009, at the St Theresa Cathedral Hall by AnCOP International Bermuda.

AnCOP International Bermuda was proud to announce that Bermuda ranked 2nd in terms of the number of GK Walk registrants (229) around Northern America. The first was Toronto with 739 registered walkers.  Third in the list was Vancouver with 221 registered walkers, followed by Winnipeg with 189 registered walkers.

The Bermuda GK Walk 2009 generated revenues amounting to $39,607.42, with $24,023.70 in profit after operating expenses. The profit will be used to start a GK Village in Echague, Philippines.
