Not all married couples wear wedding rings because of certain beliefs , traditions, or religions. But, for someone like me who accepted my husband's symbol of love and loyalty (my wedding ring) in front of a Catholic priest and a number of witnesses, it is my most sentimentally valued possession.  Until one day when we had a family outing here in Bermuda, I went looking for it miserably.

     We were in one of the beaches/parks in Spanish Point. I was not in the mood to go for a swim, but was finally convinced by my in-laws and so I went. I swam with simple strokes, then I felt my ring slipped out of my finger. I cried, " nobody move, I lost my ring in the water!" It was very ironic because everybody panicked to look for it. I could not believe it happened. How am I supposed to break the news to my husband who was not there  with us but at work?

     When we got home, carried away by my emotions, I was able to compose a poem. It made me tell my husband what I have to tell, without using my tongue.   I let him read this:                                    

                                                                            MY LOST BAND

                                                        My most valued ring from my husband,

                                                        Envied by water with a lovely sand;

                                                        Slipped out of my finger, where did it land?

                                                        Oh, Ocean, you stole my wedding band!

                                                         For four years well-taken care of,

                                                         Etched and molded for a lasting love,

                                                         An endless symbol as the skies above,

                                                         Now lost forever, no more I have!

     After reading it, he looked at me and asked, "why?'  I was speechless, tears streamed down on my face.          

     Then he said, "Don't cry. At least you all came home safe. I will buy you another one."

     He bought me another ring to treasure, and for Fr. Joe to bless. I am wearing one now, but the memory of the original band will never ever die.
